Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans Wins People’s Vote Award at Toronto International Film Festival

For those who are interested in or totally fascinated by the award-winning machine, the People’s Choice Award at TIFF is an incredible predictor of which movies receive Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards. Since the Academy expanded the category to more than five nominations, only a year has passed without the award winner receiving a Best Picture nomination. That would be 2011, where “Where Do We Go Now?” Award winning. In the same number of years, four of the People’s Choice Award winners also won Best Picture (“Nomadland”, “Green Book”, “12 Years a Slave” and “The King’s Speech”). So Universal should change its motives to give “The Fabelmans” all the campaign support they can get.

Listen, it’s hard to talk about an art medium like this. I get that, but awards play an important role in making movies that don’t just exist with the greatest profit margins a studio can get. I wanted to see “The Fabelmans” because I was interested in the art that Steven Spielberg made. If it wins Best Picture, that’s fine, even if I don’t like the movie. The prizes are all a game; What matters is work. However, smaller films by serious artists these days are very difficult to get in front of people’s eyes, and if they have to hold a prize race to do so, then I say, “Just do it. Go.” If there’s one more viewer of “The Fabelmans” because of the heightened Oscar buzz thanks to the TIFF People’s Choice Awards, it’s a win in my book.

“The Fabelmans” will begin showing limited theaters in New York and Los Angeles on November 11, 2022, before a wide release on November 23. Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans Wins People’s Vote Award at Toronto International Film Festival
