Praises for “beautiful father-in-law” overflowed after the sad news.
Stewart is known for playing Professor Clifford Jones alongside Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor in 1973.
His grieving death was confirmed today by his former co-star and former partner, Katy Manning.
She posted on social media: “The most beautiful man, husband and father of actor poet, the most beautiful of @CoralBevan @Misswendybevan has gone on his terrible big adventure.
“He was the love of my life for many years on and off screen and our wonderful friendship continued to the end.”
Stewart starred in six episodes of the 10th series of the hit sci-fi show as a Welsh biologist who helps the Doctor defeat an evil oil factory.
He starred alongside Katy, who at the time was playing Doctor Jo Grant’s companion.
One fan, recalling their episodes together, affectionately replied: “Oh Katy. What a pity to see this. Jo and the Professor are so much onscreen and so lovely to see. you’re still so close after all these years. Much love. to the Stewart family, and of course to you.”
While another fan posted: “So sad to hear about Stewart Bevan! Clearly a great man, and so proud to be a part of #DoctorWho!”
And one Doctor Who fan account wrote: “So sorry to hear that Stewart Bevan, Professor Jones himself has passed away. Stewart was a very fine actor and a wonderfully lovely person to meet. send all my love and deepest condolences to @CoralBevan @Misswendybevan and @ManningOfficial xx”
Stewart has had many other acting credits to his name and will also be remembered for his roles on television shows such as Emmerdale and films including Brannigan and House of Mortal Sin.
