Rock legend Sting says that the days of musicians performing private concerts for the oligarchs are over.

He played at a private concert for the family of a Russian tycoon in 2016 – five years before he was sanctioned by the EU.

Speaking to the Mirror yesterday, Sting said: “There is no tycoon in the UK, Russia or anywhere else who can book a gig, a wedding or a party. Those days are over.”

The singer played at the $1 billion wedding of his son Mikhail Gutseriev Said in Moscow, where he performed with Jennifer Lopez.

Mikhail Gutseriev was sanctioned by the EU last year for his close relationship with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Downing Street reported this week that Mikhail Gutseriev had previously been punished under the “Belarusian sanctions regime”.

No10 describes him as “a longtime associate of Lukashenko who is responsible for serious human rights violations and repression of civil society and the democratic opposition in Belarus”.

It added: “Gutseriev provided support to the Government of Belarus, including his business interests.”

A spokesman for Sting added that the star was “appalled” by the invasion of Ukraine and would not be performing any shows for anyone with connections to the Putin regime.

The singer took pictures in the past with the son of Mikhail Gutseriev Said

This week, the star posted a video on Instagram of himself singing the 1985 Cold War Russian song, which he says is more relevant than ever due to the war in Ukraine.

He took action against “one man’s bloody and misguided decision to invade a peaceful neighbour”.
