Storrington murder case, witnesses report horror

WITNESSES have described the “devastating” moment when police attempted to resuscitate a man as he lay on the pavement.

A 68-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of murder after a 49-year-old man died in Storrington yesterday.

Police responded to a report of an unconscious man in the High Street, Storrington, at 10.05am on Sunday but he was pronounced dead.

Workers and residents in the area have described how police tried to rescue the man.

Skye, 19, a bartender at nearby The Moon Pub, said: “The heartbreaking thing is to see the police resuscitate someone and then it didn’t work – I didn’t want to see that.”

“All we heard were sirens and then a lot of screaming and shouting.

“Apparently he had a dog with him and that was all, but we’re not sure, we had several people come in here today and told a different story.”

Meanwhile, Ricky Mercer, 32, a landscaper who has lived in Storrington all his life, said he feared knowing the man who died.

“It was a legend of the village who died today, I’m devastated by it,” he said.

“I’m sure it was a man who lived his whole life in this village. Born and raised villager, he didn’t deserve it.

“It’s devastating, we don’t expect it to happen, especially in Storrington – a peaceful little village.

“We are all heartbroken.”

Police have not yet confirmed the man’s identity but said his family is being assisted by specialist officers.

The force confirmed yesterday there was no major threat to the community.

Another man, who declined to give his name, said: “I went to get some cigarettes and saw them trying to revive him. ”

Just before 4pm on Sunday, Andrew Griffith, Tory MP for Arundel and South Downs, tweeted: “As a local MP I am in contact with Sussex Police about the incident.

“They are on site and the investigation is ongoing and is being monitored by the highest authority.

“It’s important that they can determine the facts quickly.”

Anyone with information that may assist the detectives in their investigation is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting Operation Kingscross.
