A GROUP of rarely observed radio objects have been discovered in a distant cluster of galaxies, causing scientists to puzzle.
The objects in question include a radio relic, a radio halo, and fossil radio emissions.
But why is it important?
Well, it contradicts existing theories about the origins of such objects, as well as their properties.
The strange discovery was made in a cluster of galaxies officially known as Abell 3266.
It is 800 million light-years distant and spans 300 million light-years of sky in the southern constellation Reticulum.
There are indeed plenty of galaxy clusters out there, but the galaxies represent only a small portion of what’s inside.
About 80 percent is dark matter.
A group of scientists combined their findings into an impressive picture, but found that some parts weren’t quite right.
For example, the relic takes on an unusual concave shape that has never been seen before.
As such, it has been appropriately dubbed a relic of the “wrong way”.
“If it’s a shock wave, you’d think it would bend like an arc around the edge, but this one is upside down,” said Dr. Tessa Vernstrom, Senior Research Fellow, The University of Western Australia abc news.
And it’s a lot brighter too.
“So we don’t really understand what that’s telling us,” she continued.
“Maybe there’s some kind of new physics there that we haven’t fully understood if our models can’t match the observations.”
This is just the beginning of what astronomers hope to understand.
Over the next five years, the telescope in western Australia’s outback will scan the entire southern sky where more clues may lurk.
The research results were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
