Streamer undergoes surgery for a broken back following the Twitchcon Foam Pit disaster

TWITCH streamer Adriana Chechik will have surgery after breaking her back in two places at last weekend’s Twitchcon in San Diego.

Twitchcon is an event hosted by the streaming platform Twitch where fans can meet their favorite streamers.

One of the attractions of the event was a large foam pit where streamers competed like gladiators.

However, many reported that the foam pit was extremely shallow, with some saying it was only three foam cubes deep.

Under the foam cubes there was a rubber mat, which did not allow a soft landing in case of players falling from the podium.

Before entering the pit, people had to sign a two-page waiver stating that the pit contained “risk of injury.”

However, the waiver also states that “the challenge will be provided by you in a safe environment and in a manner that complies with all relevant health and safety requirements.”

There was an additional clause in the waiver, forcing participants to acknowledge that the challenge carried the risk of “death, serious neck and spinal injuries” and that they were personally liable for any injuries caused.

After footage surfaced of Chechik injuring herself jumping into the pit, she posted a message on social media to detail her injuries.

She wrote: “Well I’ve broken my back in two places and am having surgery today to insert a folding ruler for support.

“Send your support. When it rains it pours and I definitely feel the rain now.”

Other participants also reported injuries and pain following their participation, including spinal impacts and general aches and pains.

Another streamer named Lock_Vaness reports that she dislocated her knee and sprained her ankle after landing in the pit.

Many other attendees at the event reported general mismanagement by staff.

Many wheelchair users in particular reported that staff were not aware of barrier-free entrances to the event and that they had to walk around the site several times to find one.

The foam pit was eventually closed but was reportedly still open following a series of serious injuries, including Chechik’s.
