Streaming Drive Subtitles, Explosive Dubbing, While Rocket Filming 35mm

Hiventy-Monal, one of France’s leading post-production companies, is seeing growing demand across its wide range of services, including film processing, dubbing and subtitles, post-production, film restoration and master BluRay. It has operations in France, Poland, Singapore, Vietnam, Kenya and Nigeria.

Hiventy has one of the few film lab services in Europe. CEO Thierry Schindele says that demand for the company’s film processing services is growing. Recent 35mm shots processed by the team include “SpencerWes Anderson“Asteroid City” by “Asteroid City” and “Le Lycéen” by Christophe Honoré, produced by Les Films Pelléas. Recent French films by Hiventy include Mia Hansen Love’s “One Beautiful Morning”, Serge Bozon’s “Don Juan”, Léa Mysius’ “The Five Devils” and Pietro Marcello’s “The Flight”.

Schindele expects demand for film processing services to continue to grow, citing that 40% of the films shortlisted for the Oscars were shot on film. Hiventy is providing film processing services for shoots across Europe. For example, “Asteroid City” was filmed in Spain and “Spencer” was filmed in the UK and Germany.

Film processing is only a small part of Hiventy’s overall business. 50% of the group’s revenue comes from subtitles and dubbing services for film and television, with growing demand from streaming platforms.

Schindele thinks Hiventy ranks among the top five subtitles and dubbing service providers in Europe and expects this market to continue to grow. Key customers include TF1, Arte, M6 and Netflix.

The worldwide provision of subtitles and dubbing services has been a major driver of the company’s growth, such as its acquisition of Polish dubbing studio Mediadub in the late 2000s to join Canal Pus’ expansion into Poland and the establishment of CMC in Vietnam in 2009, along with TV5 Monde’s expansion into Far East Asia.

It was when it started providing services to Netflix, from about 2014 onwards, that this corporation had to restructure its entire operations. “Netflix produces shows for worldwide distribution,” says Schindele. “This requires a dramatic increase in our captioning and dubbing services as well as the overall technical package offering. In the past we only dub movies and series when they were sold to a country.”

The group provides post-production services for film and television. Recent work includes the French cartoon “Summit of the Gods” based on the Japanese manga series and the Irish cartoon “Werewolf”.

The TV series post-production includes several projects for Netflix: “Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan,” “Trial 4,” “What’s Up” and “Notre-Dame, the Fire Part.” .

Film restoration is another important area of Hiventy, for theatrical release, TV distribution and BluRay. Recent titles restored by the team include Marcel Pagnol’s entire catalog (such as “Marius,” “Fanny”, “César”, “La femme du boulanger”), titles from the Pathé catalog ( including “Tango and Tandem” by Patrice Leconte), work for Studiocanal (including “Mr. Klein” by Joseph Losey) and films by Jacques Rivette and Krzysztof Kieślowski.

The team is also seeing growing demand for BluRay titles and by 2021 is already working on 176 titles, of which 112 are mastered in standard BluRay and 12 in Ultra-HD Blu-Ray.

Schindele is optimistic for the future: “We are enjoying growing demand for our services. There has been significant downward pressure on prices from 2012 to 2019, and the pandemic has also caused significant disruptions. But now we are seeing increasing profitability and forecast solid growth.” Streaming Drive Subtitles, Explosive Dubbing, While Rocket Filming 35mm
