Strictly Come Dancing bosses face ‘mess’ with upcoming World Cup

BBC bosses face an unprecedented schedule nightmare as the football tournament has been moved to winter for the first time to avoid Qatar’s 45-degree summer heat

BBC bosses are stepping around a scheduling nightmare – with this year’s Be sure to come dance Series that collides with the World Championship.

The football tournament was moved to winter for the first time to avoid the 45°C summer heat in host country Qatar.

And some games – potentially including England games – will kick off at 6pm or 7pm UK time on three Saturdays and two Sundays.

This will wreak havoc with the usual Strictly time slots.

A TV source said: “The World Cup will mess up schedules.

“There are a lot of games in primetime slots and even the most popular show on TV, Strictly, is likely to be affected.

“The Glitterball will be in contact when England have a game on BBC1 on a Saturday night.”

The World Cup begins November 21 with evening weekend games through December 10 with coverage BBC and itv.

After this Friday’s draw, the Beeb bosses will try to figure out how to keep Strictly fans loyal.

Options could include moving the show to BBC2, Friday nights or a less family-friendly time. A BBC spokesman declined to comment.
