“Strike over wage agreement,” the German union is demanding of Amazon warehouse workers

Germany’s Verdi union last night called on workers at seven Amazon distribution centers across the country to go on strike to force the retailer to accept the union’s sectoral agreement.

ut Amazon said it expects no impact on operations as the union tried to persuade employees not to work for the evening shift.

“Our active colleagues, who have been fighting for a collective agreement with Amazon for years, deserve our respect for the courage they repeatedly show in this dispute with the employer,” said Verdi official Stefanie Nutzberger.

The planned strike action was timed to coincide with Amazon’s “Prime Day” rebate, when large sales volumes were expected.

The union – one of the largest in Germany – said that while Amazon has consistently increased wages in recent years, the impact on employees has been mitigated by extended working hours and little to non-existent pay for holiday shifts.

“There are no longer working hours. That’s nonsense,” said an Amazon spokesman, adding that employees didn’t work on public holidays anyway.

“Our critics are calling for what we’ve already done: last year we raised wages nationwide to €12 gross and upwards per hour, and this fall we’re raising them again to at least €12.50,” he added.

Verdi said it called the strike at distribution centers in Augsburg, Leipzig, Koblenz, Rheinberg, Werne and two centers in Bad Hersfeld.

His Amazon employees have often gone on strike over pay and working conditions.

Amazon has come under increasing pressure from union groups in the US.

The German competition authority last week classified Amazon’s position as of outstanding, cross-market importance, a classification that enables the authority to prohibit anti-competitive behavior at an early stage.

The Federal Cartel Office also sees Amazon as dominating the market in its marketplace services for third-party retailers. “The classic abuse control that applies in parallel also applies here, on the basis of which we are already conducting proceedings against Amazon,” it said.
