Oh man, I was so excited to stand in the 1930s ballroom of the Claridge’s Hotel in London to witness an absolute class in tuxedo. For a moment, I looked like Daisy in The Great Gatsby but instead of getting emotional about all the “beautiful shirts,” I confessed to a friend that I had “never” seen so many men. how beautifully he dressed in elegant evening gowns — and best of all, each in his own way, with a signature twist that was the striking message of the night.
His invitation was to ‘Ralph’s Club’, a celebratory evening filled with the fragrance of Ralph Lauren, and guests mingle, sipping champagne and cocktails, and drinking in stylish decor. Spectacular Art Deco. From my vantage point, I have sweeping views to observe the guests as they arrive.
Supermodel Lucky Blue Smith, one of the two hosts of the night, and whom I had the pleasure of meeting previously at Milan Fashion Week, was tall and dapper in an ivory jacket over her top. white shirt, black tie and long pants. Monochrome is always sharp, and I love the impact of the cream and black palette. Women have loved the ‘le smoking’ tuxedo for years, but we tend to stick with a combination of satin lapels and striped pants or a long, tight tuxedo skirt. Maybe it’s time for us to get more adventurous in terms of colors and textures as we step into the tuxedo vibe.
The party guests certainly showed a gift by wearing contrasting velvet tops and waistcoats or pants with unusual shades of plum, burgundy, green and brown. But it’s when the plaid works that the men really have fun, such as actor Luke Evans, who teamed a plaid waistcoat over a double-breasted scarf jacket. cloak. And even if you just wear a plaid detail for Christmas and New Year, and then block color around it, it still works.
Rap artist Tinie Tempah took this exact style route with striking red plaid pants worn over a classic double-breasted black jacket and velvet loafers. He wears Ralph Lauren outfits, as do many guests.
It was a good opportunity to see the clothes live a life outside of the catwalk, and the vista definitely kicked off my new attitude towards tuxedo and chic evening wear in 2023.
Paul Mescal and his pearls
Irish actor Paul Mescal always looks perfectly comfortable on the red carpet — that’s a gift — and he walked out of the British Independent Film Awards in a custom Simone Rocha suit from the new menswear line. her, which debuted last September at London Fashion Week.

Pearls are one of Simone’s signature prints, and while Paul didn’t choose one of the pearl-embroidered shirts in the new collection, which will hit stores next spring, the actor did. wearing a plain white shirt (picture above) but he accentuated it nicely with a single pearl earring. There are also delicate little bows made of pearl beads on the side of his black socks, just peeking out from his ankle-length pants.
It was a night of great suits. Paul’s Normal person co-star, Daisy Edgar-Jones, wore a gorgeous crystal-studded black velvet suit from The Vampire’s Wife. If you’re following it, let me tell you it’s in the SS23 collection. The jacket is called ‘The School Blazer’ and the effect on it and the pants is called the ‘crystal hotfix’.
If you’re looking for a memorable SS23 suit and feel like ordering one, Savile Row’s Banshee has a gorgeous ‘Killer’ gold wool suit, and Ruby Slevin and Rocco Tullio will have dates here in January and February. They will be at the Curated Design Center in Kildare Village. The store’s owner, Ashling Kilduff, currently has a striking red Catriona Hanly jacket and trousers in stock and it’s a suit that just screams ‘Christmas’.
Bono and the boys
When I decided to write about men’s evening wear and how to make a difference, I didn’t expect to be able to tap into such a wealth of inspiration in five days.
They may feel like reluctant fashionistas, but the U2 boys showed a lot of personal style when attending the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors gala and gala dinner in Washington DC this month. .
Their very distinct way of working – within the confines of a black tie – reflects the unique personalities they bring to the iconic band.
For the gala dinner, Adam Clayton was in a classic style, with a dodgy bow and graphite marble jacket with a satin back, while Bono went in a different direction – a black suit, no tie and white button-down pleated shirt.
It was a black shirt for Larry Mullen Jr and The Edge, and the latter rocked his signature ‘bolo’ shoelace tie.
At the gala dinner, Larry wore a black shirt with a small tie, complete with an Irish tricolor pin. Later, however, when they all changed into white shirts for the gala dinner, I liked how Larry chose a Western-style bow, sometimes called a ‘Sunday Meeting’ silk tie, outside. White shirt.
As the U2 boys have handsomely demonstrated, you can organize your own black tie events. And you can do it rock ‘n’ roll style.
