Summer Game Festival will start this year on June 9th at 2pm ET / 11am PT, with a live show hosted by what my college Ash Parrish described as “consummate video game hype man Geoff Keighley.” According to a press release, the show will stream on virtually every platform, including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and Facebook.
After the big premiere show, there’s developer day, where indie game developers can show what they’re working on. When GameSpot notes that developers submit their games for consideration to be included on the show. Like last year, this show is presented by Iam8bit and Double Fine, the studio behind games like psychonauts, Grim fandangoand broken age. The SGF website states to “stay tuned in” to announce more partners who will be part of the show.
The elephant in the room for this announcement is E3. Earlier this year we heard that the Gaming Convention was canceled for this year. It traditionally happened around the same time that the Summer Game Fest was scheduled for, but in recent years there has been a trend for the major game studios to only hold their own press conferences or events. That seems to be the case this year as well; The Summer Game Fest website notes that Microsoft is hosting a showcase of Xbox and Bethesda games on June 12th.
Keighley and others seem aware of the changing landscape. The Summer Game Fest was announced when we heard about the cancellation of E3, and a person on twitter joked that this year’s festival is called “Keigh3”. If you’re waiting for game news, this year’s Summer Game Fest is for you. We saw one at the show last year elden ring Gameplay trailer and the announcement of Tiny Tina’s Wonderland.
