Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty enjoy a wealth beyond the dreams of most.

One of the reasons they are so wealthy is that Ms. Murty benefits from being a non-resident for tax reasons.

The Tories argue that it is unfair to question a political spouse’s tax affairs.

This is the weakest of all defense mechanisms.

The Ministerial Code specifically requires that anyone serving in government list anything that might create a conflict of interest, including their partner’s financial affairs.

So it’s interesting that the wife of the man who decides how much tax we pay employs some obscure mechanism to cut her tax bill.

It is also interesting that Ms Murty owns shares in a company that has benefited from a number of lucrative public sector contracts.

And it’s interesting that while the Chancellor is raising taxes for the rest of us, he’s allowing a system that allows the super-rich to pay less taxes.

Nobody blames people who work hard and play by the rules who get rich.

Now scientists just need to come up with a magic formula to turn back the price of a night by three decades.
