Sunscreen ready as Ireland is set to hit 20 degrees in places this weekend on what will be the hottest days of the year so far.

et Éireann have forecast highs of 20 degrees for both Saturday and Sunday with continued sunshine for most of the country.

Saturday will be a dry day in most areas, with sunny spells developing into the afternoon, with only isolated sporadic showers in remote areas.

It will be a mild day with maximum temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees and a light south-west breeze. Some showers over the Irish Sea will move across eastern and north east counties on Saturday evening and some patches of mist and fog will develop with overnight temperatures as low as 5 to 9 degrees.

Sunday starts out mild with good sunshine, but becomes cloudier later in the afternoon and evening. It will remain mostly dry with only a few rain showers at times. Highest temperatures will again generally be between 16 and 20 degrees, but light to moderate easterly breezes will keep it slightly cooler in places and showers will move to southern areas by nightfall.

Conditions will become more unsettled next week as showers and showers move up from the south, becoming heavy at times and accompanied by blustery conditions.

It will initially be mild for the time of year, but temperatures will drop closer to average by midweek, Met Éireann said.

“Monday [will bring] a wet start to the week with widespread showers dissipating towards the north in the morning and afternoon, followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. There will be occasional heavy falls with thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees with moderate to brisk and gusty southerly winds developing,” a Met Éireann forecaster said.

Those shower forecasts will continue for much of next week, with heavy downpours and the occasional thunderstorm expected to sweep across the country.

High temperatures will remain in the mid to high teens but will be accompanied by wet conditions for most of next week.
