One KINDERGARTEN said it needs to improve, saying it takes the feedback “very seriously” and has a plan.
The Supersaurus Nursery on Cromwell Road, Hove, received a ‘needs improvement’ rating from watchdog Ofsted after an inspection in August.
The inspectors said the nursery needs to increase the knowledge of child development among its staff who work with its younger children to ensure they provide “sufficient and appropriate resources” so that young children can take full advantage of every learning opportunity.
Ofsted also said Supersaurus needs to improve oversight of staff practice and support staff to ensure babies and children are consistently engaged in “enjoyable and challenging experiences” that meet their learning needs.
It must also review and improve systems to ensure that development delays are promptly identified and additional support is provided “at the earliest opportunity”.
However, the kindergarten staff was praised for how they encouraged children to recognize and express their feelings, the good relations between children and staff and the attentiveness of the staff.
The report states: “Children are warmly welcomed in this day-care center by the nursing staff.
“However, there are some inconsistencies in the quality of education and in staff expectations of the behavior of younger children. Children usually seem happy and enjoy their time in kindergarten.
“Staff are mindful of the children they interact with, but some adults are less vigilant of others. Sometimes some children are not fully engaged in meaningful activities.”
A nursery spokesman said the inspection verdict was “disappointing” but staff had raised concerns as a “priority matter”.
“Following the recent disappointing inspection verdict, we took Ofsted’s feedback very seriously,” he said.
“Our priority, as always, is the well-being and education of the children in our care and our partnership with the parents. We know parents place great trust in us to do what is best for their family and we do everything we can to keep their trust and confidence alive.
“We have a development plan for the nursery in the works and are committed to delivering a quality of care and education of which we can be proud.
“We are encouraged by the positive comments in the inspection report, but also aware of the observations that led to this overall rating.
“We have prioritized these concerns and provided additional support to the kindergarten through our highly qualified early childhood education professionals and our regional team.”
