Ukrainian mother begs PM in despair

Susanna Reid said she felt “helpless” on Good Morning Britain on Monday, when a guest on the show made a desperate plea to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Olena Gnes has begged the British government and NATO for permission to build a no-fly zone over Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

With bomb blasts and constant attacks in the country, which has seen millions flee and thousands dead and injured, Susanna and co-host Richard Madeley spoke to guests and Ukrainians journalist Olena on the latest strikes in Kyiv.

She revealed that she remained in the basement of an apartment building with her three young children, serving as their makeshift bomb shelter.

However, the latest bombing hit a residential building in the capital very close to hers, she said, as she revealed she had heard it strike.

In detailing how people remained indoors because there were no “good” bomb shelters in her area, she pleaded with the UK government and countries around the world to help her and her country. , “before it’s too late”.

She said of how to reassure her children: “I am doing my best to say we will be fine and there is still hope, and we will fight back but I don’t know how to reassure them today.

“I just wanted to say this, I’ve heard your military expert you’re talking to right now, and this reminds me, I want to quote Winston Churchill.

“Good morning England, you all know Winston Churchill right? And this military expert and other politicians in the West, they remind me of a pacifist feeding a crocodile in the hope that the crocodile will eat him one last time.”

Richard interjected: “What they’re worried about with Olena is the possibility that when we face Hitler or don’t face Hitler, the possibility that this thing becomes nuclear.

“If NATO countries confront Russia, if they impose a no-fly zone, that could escalate things to unimaginable levels. That’s what they’re worried about.”

Olena replied: “Please tell me, is Ukraine escalating anything here to a certain extent? Does the Ukrainian dong have something in particular to make Putin angry or is he just deciding?

“I don’t know if you guys need to do anything special to irritate him more or escalate.”

She added: “NATO has been the enemy, Washington has been the enemy, Europe has been the enemy … they have blamed you that you gave us a lot of weapons and you joined in.

“Why are you pretending now that it’s not about you, it’s only about Ukraine? It’s not enough.”

Susanna admitted she felt helpless to hear Olena’s pleas, and asked what she would say to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The mother replied: “Implement a no-fly zone now and stop it before it is too late, before the genocide is carried out in Ukraine, before I am killed, my children and my husband.”

Susanna told her: “Olena, I feel completely helpless, I don’t know what to tell you. You shouldn’t be in this situation to protect your baby and your baby from what’s going on.

“Your husband is holding hands, we send you love and luck and applaud your courage, and thank you for being with us this morning.”

It comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also begs NATO to once again operate a no-fly zone over Ukrainian territory as the conflict escalates.

GMB shared the clip of the president calling for action, hoping the latest strikes across Ukraine might change their mind, as conflict continues to ravage the country.

Good Morning Britain airs at 6am on weekdays on ITV.
