Sussex man convicted of sexually assaulting girl in Lewes

A man will serve nearly two decades in prison after he was found to have sexually assaulted two young girls.

Michael Coburn, 49, was found guilty of a total of 19 sexual offenses against the two girls. His victims were both under the age of 13 at the time of the incidents, which occurred over a four-year period.

Coburn, who was living in Billinghurst, near Horsham at the time of the offences, but has since moved, pleaded not guilty to the offenses but was unanimously convicted by a jury at Lewes Crown Court in August 2022.

Sussex Police Safeguarding Investigations Unit Detective Police Constable Jason Berney praised the two girls for speaking up and sharing their stories with officers.

He said: “I would like to commend the courage of both victims to come forward and testify. They were assisted throughout the investigation by specially trained officers.

“This was an extremely emotional case and the courage of the victims to come forward has allowed us to ensure that a dangerous offender is no longer on the streets.”

The investigation into the assault was launched after the two girls reported to the police in early 2022 with evidence of the assault.

Coburn, who now lives on Spitfire Way in Hamble-le-Rice in Hampshire, was subsequently arrested and charged with the allegations. The crimes against the two victims are dated between 2018 and 2022.

After the inquest, Coburn was charged with 11 counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13, in addition to four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, two counts of penetrating a child under 13 and two counts of attempted rape of a child under the age of 13.

Coburn, who appeared again at Lewes Crown Court, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday September 29. He will then serve another five years of his sentence on license.

Colburn will also be placed on the sex offender registry, where he will remain for the rest of his life. Sussex man convicted of sexually assaulting girl in Lewes
