Sussex Police arrest men in Brighton following reports of rape

THREE men have been arrested in connection with the rape of a woman near a fairground.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape, while a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit rape.

The incident is believed to have happened at The Level in Brighton on Friday 16 September in the early hours of the morning between 12.30am and 1.30am.

Sussex Police investigations remain focused on a fairground. A spokesman said they “continue to urge witnesses in The Level area to come forward”.

Police have also confirmed that the victim was a woman and that she is now being assisted by specially trained officers.

Police were at The Level yesterday conducting an investigation at the fairground.

About seven or eight officers were seen speaking to people living in trailers on the site. Officers patrolled the area.

A carnival worker said he was unsure of the focus of the investigation, but that police interviewed everyone at the scene. He added that very little was said to them by officers during their cooperation with the investigation.

A number of bystanders at The Level said they were shocked by the incident, with one woman describing it as “terrible”.

The Family Fun Park fairgrounds have been at The Level since Thursday 8th September and are expected to remain there until Sunday 18th September. The fairgrounds were quiet when The Argus visited the scene with the unused rides.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time to come forward.

Police have asked that anyone with information should report it online or call 101 and cite Operation Motto.
