Sussex student from Greece secures a spot at medical school

A TEENAGER who couldn’t speak English when she arrived in the UK has secured a place at medical school.

Olga Frosynou, 17, moved to Woodingdean with her family from Greece in 2015 to escape the economic crisis and accepted a place at Lewes Old Grammar School.

In today’s Abitur, she got an A* in German, an A in chemistry and a B in biology.

Olga said: “I didn’t know a word of English and it was so difficult in class.

“I had to ask the teacher all the time and get friends to explain things, and then when I came home I learned it again myself.

“It wasn’t until the 9th and 10th grades that I was really confident in expressing myself in English.

“Now I’m so happy that I’m going to study medicine and become a doctor. I never thought it would happen.”

Headmaster Robert Blewitt praised her results, saying: “Olga is such a determined person and has excelled despite all the obstacles along the way – we are incredibly proud of her.”

Mr Blewitt also praised the “real determination” of the school’s students after their achievements despite setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said: “We are very proud of the commitment, dedication and strength of character of our students throughout their studies and during the exam period.

“They have impressed us throughout the lockdown with their lively participation in online classes and have shown us real courage during the intensive exam period, even though they had not previously taken any public exams due to the pandemic.

“More than these outstanding results, we are proud of the courage and positivity that has shaped our A-level cohort during this unprecedented time, and we wish them the very best as they embark on the next phase of their journey.

“We know that you are well prepared for the future with your study and examination concept of the last two years.”
