Sussex train service disrupted by RMT strike action

RAIL passengers will face severe disruption today as thousands of railway workers take part in strike action.

Members of RMT and Network Rail will take part in another day of industrial action in an ongoing dispute over pay.

Services across Sussex are disrupted as trains to and from Bognor, Littlehampton, Seaford, Eastbourne and Hastings are suspended.

Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates the Southern and Thameslink services, has urged passengers not to travel unless absolutely necessary, as trains start late and finish as early as 4.30pm.

Gatwick Express services will not operate but the airport will have a limited South and Thameslink service of eight trains per hour in each direction.

Angie Doll, Govia Thameslink Railway Chief Operating Officer, said: “It is with great regret that we have to advise our passengers not to travel on Saturday 8 October unless absolutely necessary.

“Strike action means that train services across the country will be severely curtailed and many routes will not run at all.

“Services begin much later in the morning. We assume that our first trains will be very crowded. So if you can, please travel later in the day.

“Trains also finish as early as 4:30pm, so plan ahead if you absolutely have to travel.

“We urge unions to work with the industry and find a solution.”

Passengers have been urged to check their journeys before travelling, as the first trains of the day may arrive at stations significantly later.

Service will also be affected the following day as trains depart later in the morning around 7.30am.

Sunday morning trains are likely to be very crowded and customers are advised to travel later and plan their trips.

Mick Lynch, General Secretary of the RMT, said: “Network Rail workers have endured a three-year pay freeze and seen a sharp drop in living standards.

“Strong unions like the RMT are important to increase wages and create good, safe working environments.

“And if that means RMT members’ wages are higher than the market rate, then there’s something wrong with the market.”
