Sweden boss says the side will need the best game plan to face England in the last four

Sweden boss Peter Gerhardsson stressed his side will come up with an “extremely good plan” against England in the Euro 2022 round of 16 after clinching a 1-0 quarter-final win over Belgium at Leigh Sports Village.

Belgium’s robust defense stood strong for much of the encounter, helped by a player of match performance from goalkeeper Nicky Evrard, but that first-half moment came when Stina Blackstenius went on target, thinking she had Sweden ahead of VAR at 1-0 on good brought decided that she is offside.

Sweden’s performance in the second half was very similar to the first but they had to wait until the second minute of added time to finally break the deadlock when a corner in the penalty area caused chaos before Linda Sembrant’s 33rd try of the game with vigor finished.

The winners now meet hosts England at Bramall Lane on Tuesday and Gerhardsson knows it will be a tough task.

He said at a press conference: “We will have a plan, I don’t know what we will come up with, but I can assure you that we will have a plan and it will be an extremely good plan.

“We’ve got England next and we can’t take much from that because it’s going to be a completely different game, but defensively we didn’t concede much over 90 minutes.

“We know England better as a team and are a better opponent (than Spain) in that sense.

“We’ve seen all of England’s games and they’re made up of very fast, really skilled players in midfield. That will be an interesting challenge.”

Sembrant might have been a player we could have picked, but luckily we didn’t

Sembrant scored the winner well into injury time, but Gerhardsson admitted she could have been substituted shortly before with cramps.

He added: “Sembrant might have been a player that we could have lifted off but luckily we didn’t.

“She was one of the players who felt a bit cramped so after 90 minutes I had to ask how she was feeling.”

Sweden’s ecstasy was met with agony by Belgium but boss Ives Serneels believes their tournament has provided a good platform for the future and a campaign they must encourage.

He said: “We have to be proud to be here and I think everyone knows we have a group of eight professional players and next time we’ll try to come with 23.

“It has to bring us a lot of experience in the future, now they know what can happen when you work hard for something and we will take that with us for the future.

Evrard was named Player of the Match after making nine saves against Sweden after an outstanding tournament.

Serneels added: “It’s a very good game from her, she showed the whole tournament that she is the best at this moment.

“She played well in the Euros but we knew Nicky’s quality beforehand so we weren’t surprised.”
