Sweden vs Belgium LIVE: Latest updates from Euro 2022 quarter-finals as England determine opponents – Blackstenius ruled out a goal from VAR

Belgium are preparing to face Sweden in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Euro

The third quarter-final of Euro 2022 takes place tonight when Sweden take on Belgium at Leigh Sports Village, with the winner guaranteed to play England in the semi-finals.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Sweden got off to a poor start to the campaign, conceding a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands before beating Switzerland 2-1 in the next group game. Unfortunately for Belgium, the Swedes found their best form against Portugal, triumphing 5-0 to ensure they finished top of Group C. Sweden now wants to fight for the title, according to forward Fridolina Rolfö, who said:

“We came here saying we want to go a long way and we have to show that. We are expected to win this game; now we have to live up to that. We want to fight for the medals, so we have to win this match and show what we can do.”

They are the favorites to get past Belgium tonight but the Red Flames will be proud that their effort has already lived up to their pre-tournament expectations. They came to the competition hoping to make it out of a tricky group and reach the knockout stages. Their season started with a 1-1 draw against Iceland before impressing in the next game despite losing 2-1 to France. They faced Italy in a crucial final group game, with the winner poised to finish second. A second-half goal from Tine de Caigny gave the Red Flames a 1-0 win and secured their place in the knockout rounds. Can they continue their run tonight?

Follow all the action from the Euro 2022 quarter-finals to see who joins England and Germany in the next round:

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

35 mins: Davina Philtjens concedes a yellow card and misses the semis if Belgium go through.

The free kick is pumped into the penalty area for a long time. There is a wild shot that hits a Swedish player who hits the ball back towards goal. De Caigny is back to parry it but Blackstenius collects and hisses over another cross that eventually crosses the touchline.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

32 minutes: Chance! Belgium works the ball down the left before playing it to the edge of the box for Tine De Caigny. She puts it down to Justine Vanhaevermaet, who covers with a touch before flicking a shot wide of the far post.

It’s also just a little wide. Sweden must be aware of that next time Belgium have space near the penalty area.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

29 mins: Sweden were the more aggressive side and that unrecognized goal only spurred them on. Nathalie Björn drives into the penalty area on the left and passes the ball to Fridolina Rolfo.

She continues to the touchline and searches for the cross, but straps her effort right out of the game.

NO GOAL! Sweden 0-0 Belgium

26 minutes: Breathing space for the Red Flames! The goal was sent for a VAR review and Stina Blackstenius’ goal was ruled out for offside!

It’s incredibly close and Belgium got away with one.

GATE! Sweden 1-0 Belgium (25′ Blackstenius)⚽️

25 minutes: Sweden takes the lead! Belgium have the ball deep in the Swedish half but it’s cleared by Kosovare Asllani, who threads a perfect pass between the lines to send Stina Blackstenius behind.

Blackstenius still has a lot of work to do but pits and shoots her finish sideways past Nicky Evrard.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

21 mins: Julie Biesmans pursues Johanna Rytting Kaneryd into the right side of the Belgium penalty area and manages to knock the ball away from her before spinning it behind her.

The ball goes past the Swedish winger but the referee awards a corner.

The set piece swings over to Nathalie Björn, who nods the ball before putting a shot over the bar.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

18 mins: Sweden’s intensity causes problems for Belgium. The Red Flames had a lot to defend in those first 20 minutes and when in possession they seem to have lost a little of the pace.

It’s hard work for her right now.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

15 minutes: Oh my god, that was close.

A cross comes into the Belgium penalty area and takes out Amanda Ilestedt on the right after the defender pushes up for the first time of the game.

Ilestedt lashes a header at Nicky Evrard, who punches the ball away, but only into the path of Stina Blackstenius. The striker tries to get the ball under control but taps over it and the goalie jumps over and safely smothers the ball.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

12 minutes: Opportunity! Belgium is caught deep in their own half by possession and the ball rolls to Stina Blackstenius. She takes it into the box before pulling it back to Filippa Angeldal, who shoots her first attempt over the bar with a lateral foot.

That’s three good chances for Angeldal now and she only found the target with one.

Sweden 0-0 Belgium

9 mins: Angeldal has another shy shot on target to volley a cleared ball and smash it high and wide.

Belgium plays the ball to the other end of the field and wins a corner. It rolls to the other side of the box, where it leaps to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, who clears the Swedish lines.
