The victim of a deadly great white shark attack off an Australian beach has been identified as a British diving instructor who ‘loves’ the ocean.

Simon Nellit, 35, was practicing swimming in the Malabar Sea this weekend when he was attacked, Australian media reported.

The seafarers helplessly watched the predator attack the victim to death.

The attack at Buchan Point, off the coast of Sydney, on Wednesday left bystanders ‘vomiting’ with fear.

The victim died instantly from “catastrophic injuries”, police and ambulance services said.

This is the first fatal shark attack in the Australian city in six decades.

Mr Nellist suffered “catastrophic” injuries in the attack

“Everything connected to Simon is connected to the ocean,” friend Della Ross told 7NEWS.

“The news hit us like a truck because he’s one of the people who make this earth lighter.”

Mr. Nellist has been training for an undersea swimming event scheduled for this weekend.

The event has now been canceled due to the victim’s involvement.

Horrified witnesses who watched them said they saw the shark “swallow parts of its body” and shouted across the beach “someone just got eaten”.

In a shocking video taken as the attack happened, people can be heard reacting as the tragedy unfolds before their eyes.

One fisherman was heard shouting: “Someone just got eaten by a shark. Oh my! Oh no! That’s crazy. It’s a great white shark.

“I just saw a big white explosion four to five meters long on the surface right here on a swimmer and it was like a car going into the water.

“Dude, I heard a scream and the shark was just wrapping around his body and the body was half over here just outside the rock.

“It turned around and devoured his body parts and that’s it.”

Local media reported that the last human life was claimed by a shark in Sydney waters in 1963.
