Elton John claimed he saw the A-list actors at his dinner party because they were both taken with Princess Diana – and their feud has lasted for decades

Princess Diana had many suitors falling at her feet – including a number of famous faces.
Prince William and Harry’s mother attracted a lot of attention in the showbiz world and was close friends with many celebrities.
One of them was Elton John, who performed a tearful performance of Candle in the Wind at her funeral in September 1997.
The Rocketman singer first met Diana in 1981 at Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle, just before she married Prince Charles, and they hit it off immediately.
While he was filming The Lion King, the Disney boss and his wife came to England and immediately said they wanted to meet Diana.
Elton decided to throw a dinner party and invited a host of big names who were in the country at the time including George Michael, Richard Curtis, Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone.

In his 2019 book Me, Elton revealed all about what happened that explosive night – and explained that Diana was engaged in a conversation with American gigolo-actor Gere.
“The most peculiar scene developed. Immediately, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other,” he wrote.
“As the rest of us talked, I couldn’t help but notice a strange atmosphere in the room. From the looks he kept throwing them, Diana and Richard Gere’s newfound friendship didn’t go over well with Sylvester Stallone.
“I think he may have come to the party with the express intention of picking up Diana, only to find his plans for the evening ruined.”
When the guests went into the dining room for dinner, neither Gere nor Stallone could be seen.
Elton sent his husband David Furnish to find the couple, but when he returned he explained there was “a situation”.
Elton continued, “It turns out he’d spotted Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere in the corridor, opposing each other and apparently in the process of resolving their differences about Diana through a fistfight.”
According to the singer, David managed to calm things down by pretending he hadn’t noticed what was going on and telling them dinner was ready.
Apparently, Stallone was “clearly still not happy” and stormed home just as Diana and Gere resumed their position together in front of the fire.
Elton recalled, “‘I would never have come,’ he hissed as David and I led him to the door, ‘if I had known Prince F***in’ Charming would be here.’ Then he added, ‘If I had wanted her, I would have taken her!’”
But the excitement didn’t faze Diana, who was still “gazing in rapture” at Gere in the living room and seemingly unaware of the commotion with Stallone.
Elton wasn’t sure if she hadn’t noticed or that incidents like this were so commonplace for her that she was used to people fighting over her.
However, Stallone denied this ever happened in 2019 when asked about the “fight” in the comments section of one of his Instagram photos.
“Total crap for him to sell books,” Stallone wrote. “Total garbage.”
This was all part of a decades-long feud between Stallone and Gere, who will reportedly not appear in films together.
Tensions began in 1974 when they were both set to star in The Lords of Flatbush, but Gere was eventually fired from the film.
Speaking to Ain’t It Cool in 2006, Stallone said he disliked Gere almost immediately, adding, “He would strut around in his oversized motorcycle jacket like he was the baddest knight at the round table.
“One day, during an improvisation, he grabbed me (we simulated a fight scene) and got a little carried away.”

The Pretty Woman actor was set to play protagonist Chico Tyrell before he got the boot after an argument during a lunch break.
Stallone continued: “Then we were rehearsing at Coney Island and it was lunchtime so we decided to take a break and the only place that was warm was in the back seat of a Toyota.
“I ate a hot dog and he comes in with half a chicken covered in mustard and almost dripping fat out of the aluminum wrapper. I said, ‘This thing is going to drip everywhere.’ He said, “Don’t worry.”
In the interview, Stallone claimed he told Gere, “If it comes down to my pants, you’ll know about it.”
Gere then reportedly bit into the chicken meal – and unfortunately the greasy mustard sauce landed right on Stallone’s thigh.
Stallone said: “I elbowed him in the side of the head and basically pushed him out of the car. The director had to make a choice: one of us had to go, one of us had to stay. Richard got his migrant papers and to this day he honestly doesn’t like me.”
