Tadej Pogacar storms to victory on stage 6 of the Tour de France

Two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar stormed to victory in stage six of the Tour de France with a late lung attack on Thursday, snapping the overall leader’s yellow jersey to Wout van Aert.

It was the seventh Tour stage win for the Slovenian, finishing the 220km Binche to Longwy ride ahead of Michael Matthews and David Gaudu.

Belgian Van Aert, flanked by Jakob Fuglsang and Quinn Simmons, led the breakaways and the Jumbo Visma rider put on a remarkable show to extend a two-minute lead before being swallowed up by the peloton with 11km to go.

But the decision to attack the stage alone proved a costly misjudgment as an exhausted Van Aert slid down the peloton after being caught and lost his lead in the general classification.
