Taika Waititi says co-hosting MTV EMAs with Rita Ora ‘combines our strengths’

Taika Waititi said he and partner Rita Ora are “combining our strengths” by co-hosting the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) together.

The Oscar-winning director said he and Ora are “best friends” and would rather work together than work with “a bunch of idiots in Hollywood”.

The awards ceremony to be held at PSD Bank Dome in Dusseldorf, Germany, on November 13 will be the first time the famous power couple has worked together.

They first sparked relationship rumors last year after appearing together on the red carpet but have kept their partnership mostly unnoticed.

Speaking to the PA news agency about his reason for accepting the assignment to host at the EMAs, Waititi joked: “Rita, that’s the only reason.”

“It would be great for us to do things like this together, and she has done it before,” he said.

“We are both really good at working in public and doing public things like this. I think it’s just a combination of our strengths. It’ll be fun.”

Waititi said he doesn’t “know much about contemporary music”, adding: “But that’s not my job.”

He told PA that he and Ora haven’t planned what they’ll wear to the ceremony, but he wouldn’t object to wearing appropriate outfits, adding that it would be “rock” to appear in one. T-shirt.

Initially, the template will be scripted, but the likelihood of them sticking to the script is “very low,” Waititi said.

“It’s there as a backup,” he told PA.

“Getting the opening things out of the way is really the main thing, just to blend in with the crowd and get things moving.”

Waititi said that unlike award shows in the television and film industries, the EMA doesn’t “take itself too seriously”.

He told PA he hoped there wouldn’t be as dramatic a drama as the infamous Will Smith slap incident at this year’s Oscars, but added: “I really think I can fight a series of musicians.

“I’ll say right now, I’m not afraid of any musician.”

Waititi also hinted at upcoming collaborations with Ora “in the moving picture world” as well as some related to the singer’s new music, which is expected to come out next year.

“We just want to keep working together because we are best friends,” he said.

“Why not work with people you like and you want to be around rather than a bunch of Hollywood vices you can’t wait to get away from?”

Ora hosted the EMAs for the first time in 2017 at OVO Wembley Arena in London, and during her career she has also received several EMA nominations, as well as the 2017 Power of Music Awards as part of her morning show. Artist for Grenfell.
