Corey Prendergast suffered a serious spinal injury while playing football with friends last month and former stars John Aldridge and John O’Shea have rallied around the 17-year-old
A 17-year-old saw his dream of becoming a footballer dashed after a freak accident left him paralyzed.
Corey Prendergast, from Cashel, Ireland, was playing with friends when he suffered a serious spinal injury last month.
He is currently being treated at Mater Hospital Dublin, with friends, family and the wider community joining forces in a fundraising page.
The shock accident had a major impact on the local community and Corey’s parents, Amanda and Ian, who traveled from Tipperary to Dublin each day to be at his bedside.
Messages of support have been conveyed to him by former Ireland internationals John Aldridge and John O’Shea.
Corey’s club Cashel Town FC have rallied around the young athlete to offer their support to his parents and have organized a fundraiser to help his recovery. Kick it for Corey.
The campaign was supported by former Liverpool and Ireland international Aldridge, who sent his best wishes to Corey in a video message and said he hoped to see him at Anfield in the future.
He said: “Hiya Corey, this is John Aldridge, mate, ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland striker. I think you support both teams like me. I hope you are doing well.
“I think you’ve been in a bad accident and you’re not feeling well at the moment so I just want to wish you the best in your recovery and hope to see you at Anfield in the future.
“Take care, mate. You’ll never walk alone. Good luck.”
Former Manchester United and Ireland international O’Shea also shared details of the Kick it for Corey fundraiser on his Instagram Stories.
The GoFundMe post reads: “Corey Prendergast is a young man from Cashel, Co. Tipperary who started school on Tuesday 10th May 2022 as a happy fourth year TY student. What happened to Corey that day changed his life and that of his family forever.
“While playing with friends, an unusual accident happened. Corey suffered a serious spinal injury that left him paralyzed. It’s a tragedy that our community is still grappling with.
“Anyone who knows Corey will tell you about his exceptional talent as a football player. After playing through all age groups through the Cashel Town Schoolboys Club, he joined the Cashel Town youth team with the honor of being the outgoing Schoolboys player of the year for the 2021 season.
“Having played all season with the youth team, he was also recognized and at the age of 16 he played on the adult junior team, which rewarded his ability and talent.
“As you can imagine, his parents Ian and Amanda, as well as his siblings, are also making massive adjustments to their lives as Corey begins his road to recovery.
“To support Corey and his family financially, his Cashel Town Soccer family is asking you to make a donation to this GoFundMe page. Please like and share this link. Many thanks to all of you for your kind donations.”
The fundraiser reached over €22,000 (£18,700) in just five days after people were moved by Corey’s story. If you would like to donate to Kick it for Corey GoFundMe, see here.
