Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss spoke by phone this afternoon on a range of issues including the Northern Ireland Protocol.
r Martin expressed his sincere condolences on the loss of Queen Elizabeth, according to a statement from the British government, King Charles III and the royal family and the British people.
It said they were reflecting on their historic state visit to Ireland in 2011 and its contribution to promoting reconciliation and relations in those islands.
The Taoiseach also congratulated the British Prime Minister on her appointment and said he looked forward to working constructively with her.
They discussed “the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, their support for Ukraine and acknowledged the substantial cooperation between the EU and the UK as part of the global response”.
They also shared common challenges, including rising energy prices and rising costs of living, the statement said.
They discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, including the Northern Ireland Protocol, and agreed to remain in close contact over the coming weeks.
