Taoiseach Micheál Martin is said to take into account the “ability” of the candidates when appointing Robert Troy’s successor

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he will consider how well a TD can perform in the corporate portfolio when considering candidates for Robert Troy’s ministerial role.

Junior Minister Fianna Fáil resigned last week after days of controversy over his property interests.

His colleagues expect Mr Martin Mayo to appoint TD Dara Calleary, who abruptly resigned as Agriculture Secretary after the Golfgate affair in 2020.

But Kildare TD James Lawless and Cavan Monaghan TD Niamh Smyth are also in contention for the position.

Speaking today in Co Monaghan, the Taoiseach said he takes into account a person’s “ability” to take on the portfolio.

“I think of course that the capacity of a person in the portfolio is particularly the division, so people who would be able to do well in that position,” he said when asked what factors he considers.

“Ability to do the job.”

Mr Martin then added: “We’ll talk about that again.”

Mr Troy resigned from his role as Minister of State at the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Employment after insisting he had made real mistakes with his affidavit and saying he would not apologize for being a landlord.

In his lengthy resignation, Mr Troy accepted that the issue had now become a distraction for the coalition and his party’s work on the housing portfolio.

Fianna Fáil’s TD said he wasn’t trying to hide anything.

“My greatest offense is my lack of care. However, an isolated issue is excusable, but the number of mistakes made by me now, directly or indirectly, has led me to this decision,” he said.

The leader of Fianna Fáil is expected to appoint Mr Troy’s successor at tomorrow’s cabinet meeting.

Senior ministers are set to sign a TD tomorrow that will take over the portfolio in the corporate department overseen by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar.
