Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s flight to New York was diverted back to Dublin after a bird strike on an engine

Aer Lingus has confirmed a flight carrying Taoiseach Micheál Martin was forced to return to Dublin Airport tonight after a bird strike to an engine shortly after take-off.

The airline confirmed that the EI107, which was operating from Dublin to JFK Airport in New York, suffered the strike moments after take-off and was able to safely return to Dublin.

It said it would operate the flight later that evening on a backup aircraft.

“Aer Lingus Flight EI107, operating from Dublin to New York JFK this afternoon, was forced to turn back when the aircraft experienced a bird strike shortly after takeoff.

“The plane landed safely at Dublin Airport and all customers and crew disembarked safely.

“We plan to operate the flight later in the evening with a backup aircraft. We apologize to the customers affected for the inconvenience,” said a spokesman.

Mr. Martin and his delegation were en route to meet US President Joe Biden at a UN General Assembly. A spokesman for the Taoiseach confirmed that he will take the later flight, which is due to depart before 9pm tonight.

The earlier flight departed this evening at around 5.18pm and subsequently landed safely back at Dublin Airport.

Mr. Martin is expected in New York tomorrow, where he will address the UN General Assembly.

The last time Mr Martin traveled to the US to meet Mr Biden at the White House, Mr Martin tested positive for Covid-19 and the meeting had to be held virtually.
