Taylor Swift announces new album as she scoops top MTV VMA award

Taylor Swift sent fans into a frenzy at the 2022 MTV VMAs by announcing a brand new album shortly after receiving the night’s top honor.

The pop megastar took home multiple awards that night, including coveted Best Video and Best Long Form Video for All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).

Big British names largely lost to US counterparts at this year’s awards, with only Harry Styles taking home a top prize with Album of the Year.

The 28-year-old apologized to fans for his absence from the show despite performing “right next door” at Madison Square Garden in New York.

This year’s VMAs were less than an hour away at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Swift made her bombshell announcement in the closing moments of the show, which was hosted by Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow and LL Cool J.

As the pop megastar took the stage for the second time that night, he said: “I’m so honored to be recognized alongside such great artists and directors.

“For the first time in VMA history, four of the directors in the Video of the Year category are women.

“Guys I’m just so proud of what we’ve made and with every second of this moment we couldn’t have made this short film if it wasn’t for the fans.

“I wouldn’t be able to re-record my albums without you…you encouraged me to do it.

She continued, “Because you’ve been so generous, I thought it would be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album is out on October 21st.”

Swift promised screaming fans that more information would be released at midnight.

The video for All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) starring Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien went viral earlier this year after fans speculated that the song was a reference to Swift’s split from the Actor based Jake Gyllenhaal.

In her speech for best long-form video, Swift thanked Sink and O’Brien, adding that the production team “put their hearts and souls” into the video.

The show opened with a surprise performance by music superstar Fergie singing her hit song “Glamourous and First Class” with Jack Harlow.

The former Black Eyed Peas singer wore a sparkling silver top that read ‘premium’ in red letters while other music legends, including Swift, looked on from the audience.

Shortly thereafter, Harlow was presented with the night’s first prize for Best Collaboration alongside Lil Nas X for their track “Industry Baby.”

Alongside hip-hop stars Nicki Minaj and LL Cool J, he also hosts the show, which celebrates the best music videos with coveted Moon Man astronaut trophies.

Minaj, winner of the Video Avantgarde Award, performed an explosive medley of her songs during her performance.

The US rapper said she’s “never written a speech in her life,” but walked offstage to retrieve her phone and read her notes as she accepted the award from members of her fan club, Barbz.

Later, the global icon was presented to the Red Hot Chili Peppers by US comedy stoner duo Cheech and Chong.

The band’s bassist, Flea, dedicated the band’s award to the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins.

“There’s another music legend, and his name is Taylor Hawkins … I miss him every day,” he told the audience.

“Fly on, brother.”

The band also won the Best Rock award, with Kiedis and Flea thanking members of their entourage with a “thank you”.

Additional performances were given by rap legends Eminem and Snoop Dogg, who performed a trippy “Metaverse” version of their collaborative track From The D 2 The LBC.

Later, shortly after winning Best Artist, Bad Bunny gave a special performance that was livestreamed from the 54,000-seat Yankee Stadium in New York City.

The VMA show was riddled with odd performances by actor Johnny Depp, who was projected onto the screen as the ceremony’s famous Moon Man.

Hovering above the stage, he was heard saying, “I needed the work” as the ceremony opened, later adding that he was available for “birthdays…weddings…anything.”
