Taylor Swift drew backlash online after a report called her the celebrity with the worst carbon emissions from private jets, but one fan tried to deflect the outrage.
The “All Too Well” singer has come under fire online after a study conducted by digital marketing firm Yard found flights on her private jet emitted 8,293.54 tonnes of carbon this year. For reference, the study shared that this is “1,184.8 times more than the average person’s total annual emissions.”
The report, which got its information from the Twitter account @celebjetssaid Swift’s plane made 170 trips this year and spent over 22,923 minutes in the air, the equivalent of almost 16 days.
Swift’s reps told Rolling Stone in a statement that the singer hasn’t taken part in “most” of those trips because her private jet is “frequently loaned to other people.”
As backlash against Swift over the report continued to mount online, a self-proclaimed Swiftie took to Twitter to claim the singer had donated $10,000 to her environmental organization, TMZ reported.
The woman behind Britt, who goes by the name @taysrep89, shared a screenshot of an alleged direct message from Swift claiming to be offering her a donation to her organization.
The fan claimed to be the head of an environmental organization called the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). However, according to TMZ, there are no legitimate hits beginning with the word “National,” even though EPA exists.
“TAYLOR SWIFT JUST OFFERED TO DONATE 10,000 TO MY ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATION?? THIS IS BIGGER THAN ALL OF OUR DONATIONS IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THANK YOU @taylorswift13,” the woman tweetedalongside a screenshot of the alleged exchange with Swift.
She then doubled down on her claim that Swift donated the amount to her alleged organization.
“Yes, they really are real boys!! I’m shaking as I type this, Taylor Swift truly is an angel. I can never thank her enough for what she just did for us and the environment.” added in another tweet, alongside a screenshot of a DM from Swift allegedly notifying her that she just sent the money.
Many Twitter users have expressed doubts about the fan’s claims given the timing of Britt’s tweets.
“Could you please link to your organization and give some details about it? I can’t find it anywhere and think you’re greenwashing Taylor after her private jet emissions were released,” one said commented.
Meanwhile, several of Swift’s fans took to social media to share their thoughts on their private flights.
“To be honest, it’s very shocking to me. More and more celebs are emphasizing the importance of reducing emissions, but it’s this outrageous overconsumption that needs to be curbed,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “I love Taylor, but I would never take a statement from her about the climate seriously after seeing this. I really think she has the tools to do better.”
Another added: “I love Taylor. I also have strong negative opinions of celebrity private jet culture and think rich people in general have learned to prioritize their comfort and freedom over the rest of us in order to have a safe climate and I think that is morally wrong of her.”
Kylie Jenner also recently faced backlash on social media after it was revealed that her private jet was regularly making short flights.
The @celebjets Twitter account announced earlier this month that Jenner’s private jet flew 17 minutes from Camarillo, California to Van Nuys, California. Three days after the quick flight, the 24-year-old beauty mogul took to Instagram to brag about her and beau Travis Scott’s private jets.
“Will you take mine or yours?” She wrote alongside a photo of them posing in front of the Jets.
