Taylor Swift glimpses personal life on electronic-tinted Midnights

Taylor Swift’s new album Midnights offers a rare insight into her personal life and relationship with her boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn, while delivering a dramatic new sound.

pop megastar, 32, described the record as the story of “13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life” and “a journey through terror and sweet dreams”.

It shows her turning away from intimate indie songwriting on her last two albums, Folklore and Evermore, turning to electronica, synth-pop, and sometimes even hip hop beats. .

Swift once again wrote the bulk of the album with Jack Antonoff, the lead singer of the rock band Bleachers, although this time they opted for much darker sounds and lyrics.

The Lavender Haze album opening seems to contain direct references to Swift’s life, although many other songs refer to fictional characters and narration.

Swift is against the “bad things of the 1950s” that she says many women face, and seems to reference media speculation about whether she is engaged or married to Alwyn.

“All they keep asking me is if I will be your bride,” she sings. “The only kinda girl they see is a one-night stand or a wife.”

The song also features background vocals by Zoe Kravitz, the Hollywood star daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet.

The penultimate track, Sweet Nothing, was co-written by Swift and William Bowery, Alwyn’s pen name, and describes a holiday in Wicklow in Ireland in July 2021.

The romantic piece recounts a pebble she picked up from the beach and how she finds herself “running home to your sweets”.

In the semi-acoustic ballad, Swift added: “Outside they’re shoving and shoving / You’re in the kitchen humming.”

Swift and Alwyn have been together since 2016 and he helped write a number of songs on Folklore and its sister record Evermore under a pseudonym.

Meanwhile, the song Anti-Hero depicts a character haunted by self-loathing in the middle of the night.

Swift sings: “When my depression kicks in, the graveyard changes / All the people I’m haunted by are standing there in the room.

“I should not leave my devices to myself, they come with prices and vices, I will eventually fall into crisis / The story is as old as time.”

The song also shows her admitting, “Sometimes I feel like everyone’s a hottie/And I’m a monster on the hill.”

Swift also touches on politics in a confusing way, though it’s unclear if she’s describing her own feelings or that of a character.

“Do you hear my secret narcissism that I disguise as altruism as some kind of congressman,” she sings.

Swift has been increasingly vocal about her politics in recent years and supported Joe Biden and his vice president choosing Kamala Harris in the last US election.

Lana Del Rey Teams Up With Swift In Midnights (Danny Lawson/PA)

There’s a collaboration with Lana Del Rey, who also worked with Antonoff on a recent album, on the song Snow On The Beach.

Meanwhile, Midnight Rain shows Swift’s voice being electronically controlled for a deeper and more robotic sound.

It depicts a protagonist whose ex-partner “never thinks of me except when I’m on TV”.

Vigilante Shit offers a darker perspective with lyrics about “dressing up for revenge”.

Swift surprised fans when she announced a new album at the closing time of the 2022 MTV VMAs in New Jersey in August.

In a post on her Instagram to mark the album’s release, she shared a photo of herself with her collaborators and chose Antonoff as her “co-pilot”.

“He’s been my friend for life (I’m confident I know but I stand by it) and we’ve been making music together for almost a decade HOWEVER… this is the first album we’ve made with him. as our main collaborators,” she wrote.

“We toyed with ideas and wrote a few things that we loved, but Midnights really came together and poured out of us when our partners (both actors) ) made a movie together in Panama.

“Jack and I found ourselves back in New York, alone, recording every night, staying up late and discovering old memories and past midnights.”

She continued: “Midnights are a collage of pitch, highs and lows and beats and flow.

“Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights. “

Swift has been busy in recent months, releasing a solo single titled Carolina for the movie Where the Crawdads Sing, and went on to re-record her first six albums after the acquisition by talent manager Scooter Braun main recordings.

By creating a new version of the song, the star can regain ownership of the music.

Taylor Swift’s Midnights is out in theaters now.
