Taylor Swift: The director’s job is more fulfilling than I ever imagined

Taylor Swift says she never intended to direct her own short films, but that the experience was “more fulfilling than I could have imagined”.

The pop megastar discussed directing her short film for the hit song All Too Well with Oscar-winning director Martin McDonagh as part of the American magazine’s Director On Director series.

Stranger Things stars Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien star in the nearly 15-minute video, also written by Swift.

McDonagh won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Six Shooter in 2004 and has received nominations for three other Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

All Too Well: The Short Film also won best video and best long video at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) last month (Ian West/PA).

His most recent film, Banshees Of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, has received critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for musical or comedy the best.

When asked by McDonagh if she’s always wanted to be a director, Swift replied, “No, I’ve always wanted to tell stories. I always write stories, poems, songs.

“And I think this grew out of that storytelling. And the more I do it, the more I love it.”

Talking about the video for her 2019 track The Man, she continued: “I wanted a female director to direct it.

“And the few I contacted were lucky enough to be booked. We like when women work.

I was like, ‘I can do it, I can.’ And when I was directing, I just thought, ‘This is really more satisfying than I could have imagined.’Taylor Swift

Swift said she had never met Sink or O’Brien but admired Sink’s “presence” while acting in Stranger Things.

“I thought, ‘She’s never been a romantic lead and I wonder if she’d be interested in playing a young woman going through her first catastrophic, catastrophic pain’.”

The singer-songwriter took home the coveted best video, best long-form video and best choreography earlier this year at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards for music video.
