Taylor Swift’s latest album, Midnights, has sold so many vinyls that it has outsold CDs.
This is the first time that vinyl sales have beaten CD sales since the 1980s.
The midnight vinyl has sold a total of 80,000 copies in the UK – the highest number of any record made this century, guard report.
While CD sales continue to decline, demand for musical copies has clearly remained intact.
According to the publication, vinyl sales have continued to grow over the past 15 years, reaching sales of about 5.5 million copies this year.
Harry’s House by Harry Styles is the second best-selling vinyl in the UK, followed by Arctic Monkeys with their latest albumCar.
Arctic Monkeys appear twice on the top 10 list, with their albums shining at number 10, despite being released in 2013.
This year’s best-selling album also features Irish band Fontaines DC with their third album Fia is skinny and Wet Leg newcomers, wet feet.
Geoff Taylor, chief executive officer of British Phonographic Industry said: “As LP marks its 75th anniversary in 2023, it becomes more relevant than ever.
“In the age of streaming, buying physical music remains an essential and healthy part of the music market.”
Swift (33), who released midnight in October, broke multiple records with her new music, with the record being announced as the best seller of 2022.
In the days following its release, billboards announced that Swift has sold over a million copies of the album in the US.
The last time this number was reached was 5 years ago by Swift herself, when she released Reputation.
The news comes just days after the star broke Spotify’s record for most albums streamed in a single day.
