Amber Heard has told a court she was “heartbroken” when Johnny Depp first hit her as she tearfully described the alleged incident that “changed her life”.
The Aquaman star said she didn’t know how to react after the alleged incident when she testified in the US defamation lawsuit her former partner had filed against her.
Mr Depp is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in the Washington Post, which his lawyers wrongly imply he physically and sexually abused her when they were together.
Ms Heard said Wednesday in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia that the early days of their relationship were “a beautiful and strange time” and that she fell “head over heels in love with Mr Depp.”
But she said the actor hit her three times in an incident in 2013 after she laughed at one of his tattoos.
“(It was) seemingly so silly and insignificant that I will never forget it, it changed my life,” Ms. Heard said.
“He slapped me in the face and I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do.
“I thought this must be a joke … I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t want this to be reality.”
She continued: “I know you can’t come back from this, I’m not stupid, you can’t hit a woman, you can’t hit a man, you can’t hit anyone.

“I knew it was wrong and I knew I had to leave him and that broke my heart because I didn’t want to leave him… best thing that ever happened to me.”
“I wish I could sit here and say I got up and walked out of this house and drew a line and stood up for myself.
“I just looked at the dirty carpet and tried to get up and walk out the door.”
Ms Heard said Mr Depp then started crying and got on his knees to apologize, telling her he had “put the monster away”.
“(He said) I’ve done it before, I’ll do it again, it’s done,” she said.
“I sat in my car and felt like I was going to sit there forever … I was just trying to force myself to have the strength to know what I should be doing in that moment because I was heartbroken.”
Ms Heard added that in the days that followed, Mr Depp apologized “profusely” and told her: “I’d rather cut off my hand than put it on you.”
“He had this way of speaking, like poetry,” she said.
When asked if she stayed in the relationship after the incident, she replied, “Yes I did, I believed there was a line he wouldn’t cross again and that was it.”
Ms Heard previously told the court the couple had a “whirlwind romance” following the press tour for her 2011 film The Rum Diaries.
“We really had to stay under the radar because as Johnny pointed out, the world would frame me and call me a home robber even though I had nothing to do with it,” she told the court.
“It was beautiful … I felt like this man knew me and saw me in a way that no one else did.
“When I was with Johnny, I felt like I was the most beautiful person in the world. I felt seen.”
Ms Heard added that Mr Depp had shown “generous displays of affection” and that they had lived in “little bubbles of secrecy”.
“It felt like a dream, it felt like absolute magic,” she said.
“I fell head over heels in love with this man.”
The court previously heard evidence from forensic psychologist Dr. Dawn Hughes, who said Ms Heard suffered multiple acts of violence and sexual abuse at the hands of Mr Depp.
dr Hughes said the alleged acts of sexual violence she vividly detailed to the court were often the result of the actor’s “drug-fuelled rage.”
The court has already spent four days hearing evidence from Mr Depp, who said he was “obsessed with the truth” and claimed he was the victim of domestic violence.
The process goes on.
