Teen shared a picture of Garda testifying against him on Snapchat

A TEEN boy captured a Garda testifying against him and shared a picture of him on social media app Snapchat, Dublin Children’s Court heard today.

The 17-year-old youth was charged in Tallaght in November and June with dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, and possession of a driver’s license or insurance. He was warned that he risked a warrant for his post on Snapchat.

He also skipped an earlier scheduled court appearance that resulted in a warrant, arrest and bail hearing last week.

He was conditionally released and reappeared today when Judge Paul Kelly told him and his father the case would be adjourned until a date in October.

He has not yet filed pleadings, but has been granted legal aid.

Gardaí alerted the court that they had learned of a “court recording problem”.

Judge Kelly heard a photo of one of the Garda witnesses surfaced in a courtroom and it was “posted on Snapchat.”

He agreed with the defense attorney that an image uploaded to Snapchat is disappearing, but added that it was a screenshot that was re-shared. The Garda “saw himself in a photo”. The courtroom and court clerk could also be seen in the background.

The teenager failed to take his phone to court, claiming it was at his home in west Dublin.

However, his father pleaded that “my son will erase everything from his phone,” adding that he didn’t know it happened.

Judge Kelly warned the teenager if he did it again he would be taken into custody for contempt of court.

Sound and video recordings or photography are restricted in court service buildings.
