Teenager has ‘seizure’ after ‘wild’ attack on birthday trip to watch Liverpool game

Merseyside Police are asking for information after a 17-year-old was “repeatedly hit in an unprovoked attack” after playing Liverpool against Benfica and was taken to hospital where he suffered a seizure

A teenager suffered a seizure in hospital after being hit repeatedly by an unprovoked attack after watching Liverpool play at Anfield for their birthday, his angry father claimed.

The 17-year-old from Shropshire was surprised by his girlfriend with tickets to watch Liverpool face Benfica in the Champions League ahead of his 18th birthday last Wednesday.

After the game, the couple went to a city center restaurant and when they returned to their hotel, the teenager was involved in a “ferocious” attack that resulted in him breaking his jaw, the reported Liverpool echo.

On the way back to the Mercure Hotel on Chapel Street, the teenager began chatting up football with a man who is described as being in his 30s.

After waking up, the victim’s father, who asked to remain anonymous, said his son had been “devastated” by his attacker, who kept punching him in the face around 11pm.

The teenager’s father told The ECHO: “He (the attacker) said something about football and my son said it was a good game. Then he walked away and followed him and hit him on the back of the head.

“They ran to their hotel and the man kept attacking him, hitting him over and over again. Then he stole my son’s coat and wallet and ran away.

“He was taken to the hospital and had a seizure because of his injuries. We have just transferred him to a hospital here in Shropshire and he will be operated on soon.”

The boy’s father said his son was “traumatized” by the incident, which was a completely unprovoked attack.

He said: “He’s a really good kid, he was brought up right, had good parents and he’s just a good boy. He’s traumatized by it, I don’t think he’ll be the same or go back to town.

“It’s disgusting that this happened to my son, a grown man completely devastated him in a completely unprovoked attack.”

Merseyside Police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or has surveillance cameras to get in touch. The perpetrator is said to be a white male in his 30s, 5ft 9in tall, of heavy build, with short brown/black hair.

Detective Inspector Amy Smith said: “The investigation is at a very early stage in determining what happened. I would reach out to anyone who was in the area of Old Hall Street and Chapel Street at the time who saw or heard anything, or any cab drivers who were in the area who think they saw something on their dashcam come up front and talk to us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 22000255236.
