Users can’t use desktop and mobile apps, so they can’t send or receive messages.

By 4pm UK time (11am EST), normal service appeared to have been restored.

More than 1,000 people have reported problems with the platform on DownDetector, a website that keeps tabs on shutting down online services.

When trying to access Telegram’s app, users see an “updating” or “connecting” error message.

The Dubai-based company – one of WhatsApp’s biggest competitors – acknowledged the error on its official Twitter account.

It read: “Users in East Asia, Indonesia, India and Australia may have experienced some connectivity issues. Sorry! Everything is back to normal now.”

Users in the US, Europe and other parts of the world are also affected, although Telegram has not confirmed this.

It’s not clear what’s behind the power failure.

Fans of the app took to Twitter to vent their frustration at the unexpected downtime.

One angry Twitter user: “W**t why is the telegram cut off?!?!!”

Another wrote: “Telegram doesn’t work at all on my iPhone! It can’t connect to WiFi or mobile data!”
