Other trending options include the Mini Clubman, which comes fourth with an average annual premium of £322.

Rounding out the top five is the Dacia Duster, which will cost you £331 a year to insure.

Alongside publishing this list, experts have shared their top tips for keeping family insurance costs down.

Clare Egan, the Admiral’s Head of Motor, said: “There are things drivers can do to help keep insurance costs down, such as the type of car they drive and how they drive it.

“Getting points towards your driver’s license or a traffic conviction increases the price you pay.

“And while it may be tempting to try to change your personal details to get a better price, drivers need to be honest and make sure we have the right information for them, otherwise their coverage could be compromised.”

Less experienced drivers also face higher insurance fees as they are at greater risk of accidents.

Prices vary from customer to customer

“These don’t work in isolation, but are evaluated together to determine the likelihood that the customer will make a claim in the future. Therefore, prices vary from customer to customer.

“Age is one of the price factors and it can be expensive for a young person to take to the streets, as our index shows.

“The reason younger drivers pay more for their insurance is because they are more likely to have accidents than older drivers and the accidents they do have are also more expensive.

“One of the most effective ways to reduce insurance costs for young drivers is through telematics or black box insurance.

“These little devices measure how you drive and reward safe drivers with discounted insurance.”
