A tenant sent his landlords a series of angry messages over their rent dispute, then threatened to kidnap his daughter and “put him into prostitution”.

Ian Broadbent, 43, lived as a lodger in the man’s home and regularly paid rent but then asked for money to help him make ends meet.

The relationship between the two deteriorated before a fight broke out in a pub one day in August 2020 when one of the landlord’s friends challenged Mr Broadbent. Manchester evening news reported.

Prosecutor Juliet Berry said: “The defendant returned to the address and the complainant followed and found the defendant packing.

“He demanded that he return his keys to the property, but the defendant refused and called the police.”

When police officers arrived, Broadbent left and returned the keys.

But he later returned on August 15 and claimed the landlord had damaged the property and claimed he owed him £2,000.

The prosecutor told the court he threatened to kidnap the man’s daughter and said he would “put her into prostitution”.

Ms Berry said: “Essentially he was saying if you don’t pay the money his daughters would get hurt.

“The complainant sent offensive messages in response.”

Broadbent was arrested and interrogated, and he produced a prepared statement for police, explaining that his mental health was “low” at the time due to the loss of his job and housing.

He admitted sending the messages and later pleaded guilty to racketeering.

In a victim statement, the man said: “It was an incredibly stressful ordeal and I had to take two weeks off work on sick leave.

“Though I don’t hate him [Broadbent] I think he should be held accountable for his actions.”

Thomas Worsfold said mitigatingly that his client was at “the lowest point” during the offenses and had no intention of carrying out the threats.

He said: “He was desperate and in a very bad place. The complainant responded with his own inconvenience.

“It can be described as a spur knowing he was homeless and at rock bottom.

“Blackmail is described as murder of souls, with the complainant cowering in silence – this is not the case as he was able to reply.”

His client received help from a mental health surveillance team and found a new job as an engineer and has since described himself as a “changed man”.

Law Enforcement Officer Abigail Hudson said: “This is extremely disturbing news that demonstrates high levels of misogyny as well as a threat to a child. It must have been extremely disturbing news for him.

“I accept that there was an element of goading, but the reality is you reacted in this totally unacceptable way. It seems you have a long-standing way of reacting when things aren’t going your way.”
