After 10 years of operation, TERA will be closed on June 30th. Gameforge announced the impending closure after developer Bluehole decided to stop development of the game.
Gameforge’s statement said the company would have moved on if the developers hadn’t made that decision, but things are moving forward for the June 30 closure. Servers will be shut down at 10am CEST / 4am EDT that day. Soon after, the community, forums, and related social media pages will also shut down.
TERA launched in the West in May 2012 and will have been running for a decade at the time of shutdown. In Gamforge’s final statement, they announced that they will be running permanent events for the past few months. There’s also a shutdown FAQ page with some important dates in case you’re still interested in playing TERA through his last days. No new account registrations or Thaler purchases will be made after May 31st. TERA Club purchases will also be disabled on that day.
If you have any remaining thalers in your account, there are no refunds, so you can go in there and spend them until they close. TERA However, club memberships may qualify for a partial refund after closure.
There are no details yet on how events will unfold over the past few months, but expect more information from Gameforge soon. For those who have found community in a game, especially one that has been going on for a decade or more, a shutdown is the end of a chapter. While some later found new homes in various games (or sometimes on private servers), it’s better that there’s a warning and time to jump in over the past few months than a sudden disappearance.
