EE has announced that it has blocked more than 250 million fraudulent texts since implementing an anti-fraud filter.
BT’s own network has blocked 252 million shady text messages from reaching customers over the last year and a half.
Clever technology is able to detect scams and prevent them from even landing on someone’s iPhone or Android smartphone.
EE also blocked 53 million fake international calls.
This comes amid a sharp rise in scam texts and calls in recent years, robbing people of their money on everything from Covid vaccines to fake delivery notifications.
The network has revealed to The Sun that the biggest spike it has seen so far was in March 2022, with over 35 million dubious texts blocked.
This has coincided with a surge in Omicron-related Covid scams.
Cases also skyrocketed in November and December last year as scammers tried to rip people off during Black Friday and Christmas.
There was also a noticeable drop in August, suggesting scammers may be taking some vacation time.
EE introduced a special anti-spam filter in July 2021.
But today, the company is taking it a step further, partnering with Hiya, a service that uses AI technology to identify and clearly identify nuisance and fraudulent calls at the network level for both EE Cellular and BT Digital Voice customers mark.
Hiya Protect is able to eliminate caller anonymity by verifying who is calling or flagging the call with a fraud alert.
The caller can then choose to block the call or send it to voicemail.
It will launch later this year.
Christian Thrane, Chief Marketing Officer at BT and EE, said: “EE has been at the forefront of the fight against fraud since we launched our text anti-spam filter in 2021 and have blocked over 252 million fraudulent texts to date.
“Partnering with Hiya is the next step in our strategic commitment to protecting our customers from fraud.”
Tips to avoid fraudulent SMS and calls
Always take a moment to stop and think – trust your instincts, if it sounds too good to be true it’s probably a scam.
Do not stay on the phone unless you are sure the caller is real.
Never give out personal information or access to your computer, even if it claims to be from a trusted company.
Forward suspicious SMS and phone numbers to 7726, a free service, so experts can block the number and prevent others from becoming victims.
