Brits across the country are getting their £150 tax refund in days.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a £9 billion package in February to help families cope with rising costs of living.

Households that fall under council tax categories A through D — about 80 percent of homes — are eligible for the government’s one-time payment.

However, if your home falls within bands E, F, G and H (or I in Wales, too) you are not eligible for the automatic payment.

Scottish residents are also eligible for a £150 rebate if they are in bands A to D – but they’ll also qualify if they currently also get a council tax rebate.

According to savings expert Martin Lewis, people in these bands who are struggling to pay their bills may be able to apply for help via a separate £144million pot that local councils are free to hand out at their discretion.

The £144m will be used to support vulnerable, low-income people who don’t pay council tax or pay council tax on properties in bands E to H.

The exact eligibility criteria for voluntary funding are set by each council.

Around 20 million households are expected to be reimbursed, including 95 per cent of Brits renting property.

The issue of refunding residents depends on the local authorities, which means that the exact payment date differs depending on the area and how you paid your council tax.

People who pay their bills with a monthly direct debit are expected to receive their payments before people who use other means.

Residents without direct debit will have to apply for the one-time payment, with some councils now revealing how to do it.

Residents of Sunderland, Leeds and Manchester have already received their rebate and more local authorities will be giving their rebate this week.

North Northamptonshire Council

North Nothamptonshire Local Authority intends to start disbursing payments to direct debit customers from Monday 9 May, it says.

North Northamtonshire Council adds it will soon be in touch with households paying by other methods.

Council of Torbay

Torbay residents who pay council tax by direct debit will also receive their automatic payment of £150 from Monday.
