Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Bare-Bones Budget Is Meant To Bring Real Skeletons To The Set

Using real human bones gives “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” a realistic feel, but it comes at a rather disgusting price. “Back then you needed more light for filming. So the light would cook [bones]”Hooper remember. When asked if the film smells like a result, the director replied, “Oh, that’s right.”

An experiment in the arts contributed to the horrible smell on set. Actress Marilyn Burns recalls: “Someone thought of taking dead cats and dogs off the pound and using formaldehyde on them. Terror Trap. “Everybody agreed it was a terrible idea. So they had to decide to burn them and bury them.”

Between the burning of animal carcasses and the cooking of human bones under the lights, Burns felt that the olfactory attack fits the film’s atmosphere. “The smell of burnt meat just enhances the feeling around the movie,” she emphasizes. “It’s too bad.” The chicken head from the film’s iconic dinner scene creates similar problems. “We didn’t use formaldehyde,” admits Burns. “You know how chicken can smell… imagine that in the light, under the heat.”

The dead aren’t the only ones causing the stench. Gunnar Hansen, who plays Leatherface, is also a source of the smell. “Gunnar, of course, smelled so bad because he was wearing that outfit,” Burns recalls. “He has to wear it constantly…no one can wash it. He can’t stand on his own after a while.”

Despite – or possibly due to – unstable conditions, “Texas Chain Saw” exceeded all expectations and became a huge success. It has redefined horror and the cinematic rating system itself. With just a few bones and a chicken head, it changed all that. Diamonds are made under pressure, right?
