In addition to the six youths whose deaths have been confirmed, Eva Mireles, a fourth grade teacher who had been at the school for about five years, was killed in the shooting reportedly trying to protect students.
Her aunt, Lydia Martinez Delgado, confirmed the death to ABC News.
Delgado said: “I am angry that this shooting is continuing. These children are innocent. Guns shouldn’t be easily accessible to everyone.
“This is my hometown, a small community of less than 20,000 people. I never thought that this would happen to especially loved ones.
“All we can do is pray for our country, our state, our schools and especially for everyone’s families.”
Mireles was married to Ruben Ruiz, a 43-year-old police officer with the local police department, and the couple have a college-age daughter.
In her Robb Elementary School profile, she described herself as an active runner, hiker and sometimes biker.
A second teacher, Irma Garcia, was identified as another shooting victim by heartbroken family members and friends.
The 46-year-old co-teacher had been teaching for 23 years and was nominated for 2019 Teacher of the Year by the Uvalde Independent School District.
Her nephew John shared the news of her death on Facebook, saying: “My Tia didn’t make it, she sacrificed herself to protect the children in her classroom. IRMA GARCIA IS HER NAME and she died a HERO. She was loved by many and will be truly missed.”
There have been a number of reports online and on social media about the possible identities of other victims, but so far no more have been confirmed by their families or authorities.
