That’s graduation for 2022

Well, pat yourself on the back, pour yourself a stiff drink and breathe a sigh of relief: somehow we made it to the last working day of 2022, scheduled for the next week or two to surprise you with a whole host of our Games of 2022 series, Ian and Zoe providing a veritable blizzard of videos including a watchalong of some truly terrifying Christmas cartoons and of course the traditional festive lists. It wouldn’t be Christmas without her, would it?

We’ve just compiled the Reader’s Top 50, which brings up some fascinating results – as always, thanks for your excellent contributions – and our own pick of 37 of the year’s best (why 37? Because we’re so annoying, but I’m sure you already knew that) .

And here’s my favorite Christmas tradition – Team Eurogamer Yule Log.

Going through them all was enlightening and shows what a year it has been. An odd year, yes — in almost 15 years of writing about video games, I can’t recall a quieter 12 months for major triple-A titles, but I can’t recall a year that much either offered quality or variety . It’s easy to forget when we’re twiddling our thumbs and waiting for stars like Starfield or Tears of the Kingdom, but there really has never been a better time for the medium if you like your video games a little interesting.

And of course we’re looking at the keg of a year that features hitters like Bethesda’s next blockbuster RPG and Nintendo’s sequel to a modern masterpiece, as well as the most promising mainline finale fantasy in a generation or two -Capcom’s new Street Fighter that’s firing on all cylinders, and – eight years after Shigeru Miyamoto first told us all about it – Pikmin Goddamn 4. 2023 really promises to be something special, and I’m already excited for what’s to come.

But let’s sit back and reflect on what was, and maybe even enjoy a break from all the noise and hassle. It was a pleasure having you with us in 2022 and I hope to see you again in 2023. Thank you for being here and wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
