That’s what every Irish person said after today’s decision to just let Cert take the exam

Everyone at IRISH said the same after the decision to hold only the Leaving Cert exam this year.

Today, the Minister of Education confirmed that this year the Graduate Certificate and Middle School will be held only as an exam.

The government met this morning to discuss plans for a Certificate of Employment that will come into effect this year.

The combined approach that Leave Cert has seen during the 2020 and 2021 pandemics will be scrapped this year, despite calls from students and opposition parties.

Speaking this afternoon, Minister Norma Foley says that there have been significant changes to Leave Cert’s assessments, across papers and other review components, and that the changes are intended to ease the “load on applicants”.

Staff absences caused by Covid-19, as well as experience going to school during the ongoing pandemic have prompted another year’s “non-traditional” Leaving Certificate competitions.

These appeals focus on a hybrid approach to exams in which students will have a choice between a seated exam and an accredited score.

Taking to Twitter, people expressed today’s decision as “totally inadequate” for a number of reasons.

Some say the decision should have been announced earlier to allow students to prepare for their exams.

While others say students are not getting equal access to school during the pandemic due to personal circumstances.

However, one person argues that the proposed cure may be the better and fairer choice.

Katie tweeted: “If it has to be a Traditional Leaving Cert, so be it, but I don’t see why it couldn’t have been announced sooner to give the students more time to prepare for the games. ridicule.”

‘DARK AGES’ SYSTEM

“Young people’s access to curriculum varies widely and depends a lot on their individual circumstances during the COVID pandemic,” says Gareth.

“This makes today’s announcement of Leaving Cert completely unsatisfactory for many students.”

Becca wrote: “The Department of Education really took the opportunity to pull people who were completely unfit for purpose out of the cert system out of the dark ages and they just said no. I hate it here.”

While Keith said: “Leaving the cert-only exam-based system is wrong and needs to be changed to reflect more ongoing assessment.

“But given that the hybrid system won’t work equally for everyone this year, is the current proposition of fewer questions and more options a better and fairer option?”
