A 16-year-old boy has died after getting into trouble in a river with two of his friends, police say.

Officers were frantically stopped by members of the public just after 5.30pm on Friday after reports a child had entered the Jubilee River and gotten into trouble at Amerden Lane, Taplow, Buckinghamshire.

Thames Valley Police said Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Fire and Rescue Services and the South Central Ambulance Service had launched a “full search” with the help of the National Police Air Service.

Police said a man went into the water to rescue the boy before emergency services arrived but were unable to locate him.

The student’s body was found in the water just before 6.40pm and pulled from the river, police said.

Police say his death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Superintendent Emma Burroughs, Commander of the Local Police Area for South Buckinghamshire, said: “This is a complete tragedy and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who has died as a result of this incident.

“We are in the early stages of investigating this incident, but do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.

“There was a quick response from all emergency services but unfortunately the boy was found dead after an extensive search of the river around 6.40pm.”

She added: “This was an extremely traumatic and disturbing incident and despite the best efforts of the emergency services at the scene, we were unable to save the boy who was with two friends at the time.”

“I understand that a member of the public entered the river shortly after the boy got into trouble but was unable to find him.

“I want to commend him for his courage and bravery.

“My sincere condolences go out to the boy’s family and friends and I would ask that their privacy be respected at this incredibly traumatic and trying time for them.”
