The 21 best Denzel Washington movies, ranked

One of Mira Nair’s first narrative features is the incorporation of an extraordinary cultural fusion, from India through Uganda to Mississippi. It is the love story between Denzel Washington’s carpet cleaner Demetrius and young Mina (Sarita Choudhury), who lives and works in a motel with her family. Roshan Seth plays Jay, Mina’s father, who dedicates the film to his determination to reclaim his land and home in Uganda, or at least be compensated for it.

Although it has some political and social commentary, of course, it also has a lively and erotic atmosphere. Mina and Demetrius take a slow walk along the bayou where they shared their first kiss, or stroll along the beach in Biloxi before a sultry, lustful and dreamy love scene. Washington’s physicality – from his determined strides, to the tight closing of his mouth, to the adjustment of his cap – makes Demetrius a real, living character.

Mina and Demetrius are the product of their family, friends, and traditions, and both want to escape and have a new life together. Demetrius brings Mina home to cook, there’s an Indian wedding, a variety of dance styles are performed, and flashbacks to Uganda provide extra layers to the complex cultural landscape. The ending, where Jay finally returns to Uganda and realizes it’s no longer home, is especially touching. It’s great to see Washington in a rare romantic role, and one from a woman’s perspective. “Mississippi Masala” is an absolute highlight of his career. The 21 best Denzel Washington movies, ranked
