A college student who spent hours interviewing for a part-time job eventually fell in love with the boss who was old enough to be her father.

Suzanna Diaz, now 25, from Lake Jackson, USA, was looking for a part-time job to earn some extra income while she was in college when she came across a job opening at her local restaurant in 2018.

She went into the restaurant and was just sitting in a booth next door to fill out an application when she got a pat on the back.

She turned and encountered an elderly man who introduced himself as Tony Kahanek, the restaurant’s 55-year-old manager, who wanted to interview her.

As the two spoke, they realized they had a connection, so Tony asked Suzanna for her phone number before she left. Suzanna said she went home and repeated the conversation over and over in her head that evening.

Suzanna received a text message the next day from an unknown number, which she didn’t want to answer until she realized it was Tony. They struck up a conversation and met for dinner a few days later after work.

As they got to know each other a bit better, they realized they had many similar interests and began sharing personal stories. They kissed just before he took her home, Suzanna recalled feeling like a “whirlwind” moment.

They kept their relationship a secret and wanted to avoid any negativity that might affect their relationship in its budding stage. But after a few months of working together and talking every day, Tony asked Suzanna to move in with her as he wanted to come to her house at the end of the day.

Despite being smitten, Suzanna knew it meant she had to tell her parents about their relationship, and she was nervous about how they would react. Suzanna’s parents initially asked if she was serious, but after seeing how happy she was, they welcomed Tony into the family.

Tony’s mother, on the other hand, accepted their relationship immediately. She now hopes that one day the two will marry and start a family together.

Some of Tony’s and Suzanna’s friends weren’t very supportive – with odd looks from a few of them discouraging the duo from getting intimate around them.

Others have made comments about Suzanna having to be a “sugar baby” – which she’s learned to ignore.

Suzanna finds being with a mature man more reassuring than someone her own age and feels a greater sense of appreciation from him.

Now, three years later, the two are happier than ever and have started talking about their future together.

“I was twenty-two years old when I decided to find a part-time job as a waitress in my area when luckily a position opened up at a family restaurant near me,” Suzanna said.

“I rushed there hoping to be one of the first to inquire to secure the position as I was desperate for some extra money.

“When I arrived, they asked me to sit in a booth and fill out an application form, and just as I was done I felt someone pat me on the back. I turned to see a tall, charming man whose eyes sparkled in front of me – I was fixated on how handsome he was.

“I refocused and he introduced himself as Tony, the restaurant’s general manager, and we started talking – until I realized what time it was and knew I had to go home.

“My heart was still pounding with excitement because I couldn’t believe how in love I was with someone I barely knew until I got a text message from them the next day.

“We were on the phone late into the night when Tony suggested we meet up for a bite after work a few days later.

“As soon as I saw him my heart started beating faster and I knew I was in love.

When Suzanna and Tony realized their co-worker-boss relationship had escalated, they knew they could no longer hide it from their families and friends.

“We told our parents, mine were concerned at first but supportive when we saw how happy we both were,” Suzanna said.

“Tony’s mum was over the moon and hasn’t stopped talking about our getting married, although that’s not on the horizon – but we’ll see this year.

“After a few months we decided we wanted to move on to the next chapter of our relationship and I started packing to move in with him. I moved into Tony’s apartment and while I was initially scared because I thought living together so soon after meeting could put a strain on our relationship, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

“We get along perfectly and now, three years later, we are happier than ever and have started to discuss our future together.

“I feel like I’m experiencing a fairy tale romance and have met my soulmate, something I thought I would never have, especially at such a young age.

“I wish people would understand that a relationship can come from anywhere and be with someone you least expect it to be.

“Our relationship feels so natural to us and I think it’s because we prefer to listen to our hearts rather than anyone else’s opinion.

“Only you know what direction you want your life to take – if the relationship fits, then that’s all that matters. There is so much happiness that a lifelong partner can bring, don’t miss out on a little taboo.”
